Explore Volvo’s new all-electric SUV: the EX90

Volvo's new flagship EX90 isn't just another electric SUV – it's one that can power your home.

Following a lengthy teaser campaign, the EX90 was finally revealed in the winter of 2022.

Later launching in 2024, the electric SUV isn’t just a new model, the EX90 symbolises a new era for Volvo with its fully electric powertrain.

With bi-directional charging capability, the EX90 can actually feed electricity back to your home during power outages or peak pricing periods – a clever feature that could help offset those rising energy costs.

Starting from around £82,660, the EX90 delivers competitive space, impressive electric range, and that trademark Volvo elegance. It wasn’t just a new model launch.

It symbolises Volvo's transition to fully electric vehicles.

Join us as we take a closer look at the Volvo EX90 and see what makes it the ultimate flagship SUV.

Volvo EX90

Volvo EX90 has up to 517bhp

Drive

The EX90 comes with an impressive two electric motors as standard, and the performance figures are really something.

With 408 horsepower and 770Nm of torque, the EX90 Twin Motor is quick and can accelerate from 0-62mph in 5.9 seconds.

The Twin Motor Performance ups the ante with 517 horsepower and 910Nm, hitting 0-62mph in just 4.9 seconds – pretty spectacular for such a big SUV.

At this size and power, the handling is impressive, considering this car weighs around 2.7 tonnes.

That's a lot of car to control, and the EX90 does so well – but this isn't a car you'll want to be ragging around B roads. It's more refined motorway cruiser than country lane carver.

The air suspension absorbs bumps and road noise well, though you'll still be aware of the bigger imperfections. What you get is a composed, comfortable ride that feels appropriately luxurious for a car at this price point.

Being an EV brings all the usual benefits: a quiet, smooth and powerful drive that makes every journey feel effortless.

The instant torque means overtaking is a breeze, and the refined nature of electric power makes this a genuinely relaxing car to cover miles in.

Design & Interior

At first glance, the Volvo EX90 looks like the most futuristic Volvo ever made. It has a sleek, rounded front that gives it a properly modern presence, while the signature 'Thor's Hammer' headlights create an unmistakable look on the road.

Unlike some premium competitors that rely on fake plastic grilles, the EX90's clean, Scandinavian minimalist design feels refreshingly honest – there's no pretence here, just clean lines and purposeful styling.

Inside, Volvo's commitment to sustainability really shines through. The premium cabin uses recycled plastics and renewable materials throughout, while the exclusive wool blend upholstery delivers that elegant Scandinavian aesthetic Volvo has become famous for.

The dashboard layout is typically Volvo – unfussy and intuitive, with quality materials that feel like they'll stand the test of time. Everything has that satisfying, well-engineered feel you'd expect from the Swedish brand.

And above it all? Volvo's largest panoramic roof yet, flooding the cabin with natural light.

Volvo Ex90 boot space

2,135 litres of boot space in the Volvo EX90

Space & Practicality

The Volvo EX90 is built for real life – and all the stuff that comes with it.

With seven seats that’ll actually fit adults and a generous boot, there's room for the whole family plus suitcases, golf clubs, toys, and whatever else you need to haul about.

If you don’t need to carry seven people, you can put all the seats down and enjoy a whopping 2,135 litres of space.

With the seats up the boot capacity is still a respectable 384 litres. Want just five seats up? The boot space becomes 1,057 litres.

But Volvo hasn't stopped there. The EX90 comes with both a rear boot and a 'frunk' (front boot) which is 46 litres – perfect for storing charging cables.

Clever storage solutions are dotted throughout the cabin too, including dedicated spaces for passengers to stow their bags and belongings.

Volvo EX90 charging

10 to 80% of charge in just 30 minutes

Range and charging

Both EX90 Twin Motor models will come with a 111kWh battery , delivering an impressive WLTP Comb range of up to 385 miles – easily enough for most people's weekly driving.

Charging is refreshingly quick too. Using a fast charger, you can go from 10-80% in just 30 minutes.

But here's where the EX90 gets clever: bi-directional charging means it can actually power your home. The car becomes a massive battery bank, storing cheap overnight electricity and feeding it back to your house during expensive peak hours or in a power cut.

This makes your energy utilisation cheaper, more efficient and more sustainable.

The idea is that you’ll be able to use leftover battery charge to power your house during peak energy times throughout the day and charge the battery at night when energy prices are cheaper.

14.5-inch infotainment screen

Technology

The EX90's tech setup is genuinely impressive, built around a core computer that makes everything faster and more responsive.

The centrepiece is a large 14.5-inch portrait touchscreen – bigger than the XC90's and much more intuitive to use. Your key driving information appears on a separate 9-inch display that cleverly moves with your steering wheel, so it's always perfectly positioned.

Like most modern cars, it supports wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, plus over-the-air updates to keep everything current.

But here's the really cool bit: the front headrests have built-in speakers as part of the Bowers & Wilkins sound system, creating an incredibly immersive three-dimensional audio experience.

It's like having your own personal concert hall.

Safety

The Volvo EX90 does what Volvo does best – safety. It's packed with cameras, sensors, and LiDAR (Light Detection and Ranging) technology to navigate roads with unprecedented precision.

All these clever features have been designed to keep you and your passengers safe.

This SUV can alert and react to oncoming vehicles and potential hazards when going through a junction. Plus, the car can work out if you’re feeling drowsy or distracted and help when support is needed with sounds and messages.

One particularly thoughtful feature is the occupant sensing system – it can detect if a child or pet has been accidentally left in the car and will alert you immediately.

The climate system can even adjust temperatures automatically to prevent overheating.

The verdict

The Volvo EX90 isn't just another electric SUV – it’s a nod in the direction of where Volvo is heading.

Yes, it's expensive, but you get a genuinely luxurious seven-seater that can power your home, keep your family incredibly safe, and cover nearly 400 miles on a single charge.

The bi-directional charging alone makes it compelling for anyone serious about sustainable living.

It might not be the most exciting SUV to drive, but as a refined, practical, and forward-thinking family car, the EX90 is hard to beat.

If you're in the market for a premium electric seven-seater that's that will be smooth, safe and comfortable on every journey, the Volvo EX90 deserves serious consideration.

Planning for that big family life, or just want the extra space?
